Our Philosophy

All children want to learn. With the freedom to investigate the world around them, they will become active learners

Each child is unique and develops at his/her own rate through developmental stages and different learning styles.

Children develop best in a caring environment where they are allowed to express themselves and when learning experiences interest them and are part of their world.

A positive self-concept is the foundation for learning and success.

We believe investing in early childhood education and development is vital to the future of little innocent one’s of India. Each child is special and learning cannot be forced upon him/her, its always born out of their own curiosity and questions.

At MMI each lesson involves a hands-on approach to learning. Instead of a major focus on reading and writing, students frequently use all of their senses in a Montessori classroom, and learn from asking questions, playing and exploring the world around them.

Montessori Methodology helps each child spontaneously reach his or her full potential - intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Teaching values at our school are aimed towards imparting qualities of self-confidence, poise, a spirit of sharing, and exemplary social behaviour. The curriculum supports meaningful, exponential development of reading and prewriting skills, math, and a keen, scientific awareness of the world around us. Such cognitive and affective input from the school brings about a holistic development of the child's personality at an early age that is an invaluable investment for their future.

Montessori education helps to keep kids physically and mentally fit, thus giving them a leg-up and healthy skills they can use the rest of their lives.

Message from Managing Director:

Sanjiv Sharma(B.MKT, MBA,MIS(Australia))

Few years ago when my first baby girl was born along with was a birth of my new dream: to    offer the best early quality enriched learning experience to my daughter. Since then, I have been determined to learn, to explore and to experiment. Overcoming many obstacles, I was always able to celebrate my journey of discoveries and along the way have achieved the     sheer contentment of procuring the best in education to all my three daughters thus far.

I now continue with one goal: to motivate and extend relentless support to those who are     equally keen to inculcate similar enigma for their own children and to offer the best services to all those young children. MMI (Modern Montessori International) is the face of my inspiration, and with this I continue on my mission of a life-long learner to explore and discover new     approaches towards education.

I am very confident and sure that, MMI will blossom in Pune, and it will continue to share its vast and glorious thriving energy for those who will be part of this family, or those who have the same dream and vision in educational excellence.

As a parent we all go through that emotional syndrome, separation anxiety when it comes to  sending our little bundle of joy to get that first-ever experience of what we call a classroom.  Whether your kid has been in preschool since age two or is gearing up for their first-ever experience in a classroom, the changes are big and   the landscape of rules, school supplies and bus stops can seem overwhelming to navigate.

The most important thing and what I strongly believe, is that the pre-primary is the first official on board expedition of     schooling for every child where they develop physically, socially,  academically, emotionally, which eventually goes along throughout the school year(s) with an  exceptionally special experience which every parents awaits to unfold.

The child alone does not embark on this journey, it’s equally important for parents and        teachers to work together to provide that quality enriched education right from the early years of their growing and replenish the successful experience for each child. All I can say is "value each child as an individual".

“The Discovery of the Child” by Maria Montessori was my holy book when I was a young graduate and in the process of discovering and exploring my passions. My passions were blessed with wings when I pursued training in Montessori Method of Education through Modern Montessori International (MMI), Singapore in the year 2003. Since then my journey in the field of education has been very enchanting. The pillar of my accomplishments is based on the strong foundation laid by MMI in understanding the growth and development of the child with holistic approach. The various roles and contributions in my career abroad as well as in India, as a Preschool Teacher, Preschool Head, Vice-Principal, Mentor, Trainer and Guide have given me immense learning opportunities, pleasure and satisfaction. I consider myself very fortunate to venture into various pedagogies, teaching-learning methodologies and constantly upgrade myself to meet the expectations of the contemporary education. And here I am, reuniting with my foundation and extremely delighted to continue discovering the young minds with MMI, Pune!

Message from Principal:

Dr. Maria Montessori explained, “The greatness of the human personality begins at the hour of birth.” (Absorbent Mind, chapter 1, page 4)  “What the mother brings forth is the baby, but it is the baby who produces the man.” (Absorbent Mind, chapter 2, page 14)

Maria Montessori approached the education as a Scientist and designed a fabulous method to develop the whole personality of the child at his/her own natural rate of progress through the motor, sensory and intellectual activity. The Montessori Method of Education is a self-motivated method of learning which takes into account the whole child and his place in the community. The tools that help child absorb the attributes in his/her environment are the Absorbent Mind and the Sensitive Periods in child’s life such as sensitivity to order, to five senses, to minute objects, to co-ordination of movement, to language and social aspects of life. Absorbent Mind and Sensitive Periods describe that the child is not passive but follows the specific pattern in gaining knowledge from the environment and building the personality.

Three fundamental principles of this method are- Observation, Individual Liberty and Preparation of the Environment where the child and his freedom has a topmost priority. As children absorb learning from their environment, MMI emphasizes on providing a conducive learning environment for the developing child. The perfectly Prepared Environment stimulates child’s need of physical, emotional and intellectual growth, safety and hygiene.

The Prepared Environment consists of Directress, Materials and Activities. The activities are specially designed and selected learning and cultural activities each of which is introduced precisely when the child is ready and the material is freely available to the child to independently conduct the activities. The environment is based on the natural laws of the development of child, that is, Law of work, Law of Independence, Power of Attention, Development of Will, Development of Intelligence, Development of Imagination and Creativity, Development of Emotional and Spiritual Life and the Stages of Growth. The basic elements of prepared environment are Concepts of Freedom, Structure and Order, Reality and Nature, Beauty and Atmosphere, The Montessori Materials and Development of Community life.

The directress guides the children on their path of self-construction by providing freedom of movement/choice/speech/growth/to love and to be loved and freedom from danger/unhealthy competition and pressures. She is the ‘caretaker’ of the place and materials, ‘facilitator’ of the child’s interaction with the materials and ‘observer’ of the child’s work and development. She is the dynamic link between the children and the prepared environment.

The children have two main educators in their lives-their parents and their teachers. Parents are the prime educators until the child attends school and they remain major influence in their child’s learning throughout the school and beyond. The family culture, attitudes, language, customs, beliefs, environment have a great impact on child’s personality. The school and parents have crucial roles to play in terms of child’s holistic development.  It is very important to have a collaborative approach towards this development as the common factor here is the child and his well-being. That is why; we at MMI believe in transparent, open environment and encourage parental involvement while we celebrate together the child’s wonderful preparation for life with greater power of discrimination, observation, awareness, control, co-ordination and judgement. The world today has become so fast-paced and competitive that the most important focus of MMI for these young children is to assist them to emerge as self-reliant, intelligent, motivated individuals of tomorrow for constructing harmonious world.

1. What is the difference between Montessori and traditional education?
Ans: The Montessori Method of education is basically a unique approach to learning. Rather than "teaching" the child concepts, an environment is designed to stimulate the child's interest and facilitate his understanding and learning capacities spontaneously with little or no adult intervention.

Montessori emphasizes learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching, or reading. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own, individual pace and according to their own choice of activities from hundreds of possibilities. Learning is an exciting process of discovery, leading to concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning. Montessori represents an entirely different approach to education.

2. Can I do Montessori at home with my child?
Ans: Yes, you can use Montessori principles of child development at home. Look at your home through your child's eyes. Children need a sense of belonging, and they get it by participating fully in the routines of everyday life. "Help me do it by myself" is the life theme of the preschooler. Can you find ways for your child to participate in meal preparation, cleaning, gardening and caring for clothes, shoes, and toys? Providing opportunities for independence is the surest way to build your child's self-esteem.

At the school level many homeschooling and other parents use the Montessori philosophy of following the child's interest and not interrupting concentration to educate their children.

In school only a trained Montessori teacher can properly implement Montessori education, using the specialized learning equipment of the Montessori "prepared environment." Here social development comes from being in a positive and unique environment with other children -- an integral part of Montessori education.

3. What are the Special Features of your School?
Ans: The USP of MMI is that it has a warm, secure and a comforting environment. Here, the child has the freedom to explore, satisfy his curiosity and cater to his inner needs. The close interaction ensures that each child is heard and cared for. This goes a long way in building up the child’s personality, confidence and helping him to become an achiever.

MMI Pre-school is a very special place for children where they come happily and learn a lot. It has maintained its standard of excellence. Every part of it is a valuable arena of learning and a sense of balance permeates in every aspect of life. It has a very colourful & child friendly environment.

8. Is School Uniform compulsory?
Ans: The specially designed uniform is recommended. This tradition contributes a strong sense of community at the School with an added benefit of having a neat & well groomed child.

9. What is  the extent of  parental involvement?
Ans: Parent satisfaction is the prime concern at MMI which encourages parental involvement at all stages not only  to have a complete transparency but also to use the creativity of the parent fraternity to its fullest . Parent-Teacher Meetings are a regular feature of the MMI calendar. In addition to these, a fortnightly feedback about activities undertaken is sent along with artworks. An annual assessment of the child’s progress is also provided at the end of every academic session. Besides all this, parents have the freedom to meet the teachers on any day with a prior appointment.

Montessori Environment

Montessori Method might be defined as "education by means of liberty in a prepared environment". The "prepared environment" consists of an open and airy classroom with many materials in each area of learning displayed in an ordered fashion. This ordered environment strives to create an ordered life. The child learns to return each "job" to its place before choosing a new project.

The pre-school child has the free choice of jobs within the prepared environment, which creates independence and self-direction. The free choice is limited to each material not already in use by another child unless the child using a specific material "invites" another child to and or share in the project. This develops the respect of individuals and their rights.

The elementary child works on a "contract" basis. The child has the responsibility of scheduling his or her time to complete a given amount of work in a given amount of time, yet has the freedom of sequence.

The five traditional Montessori areas of education are:

Practical Life Exercise
The Exercises of Practical Life, which are the foundation of a Montessori environment, provide a wholesome range of activities that allow a child to develop control and coordination of movement, awareness, of his/her environment, good work habits, responsibility, concentration, attention, independence, order and positive self-image which can be attained by spontaneous and purposeful work.

Sensorial Training
Children learn through the five senses. The primary purpose of sensorial exercises is to further refine his/her senses of touch, smell, sight and hearing. The materials used in the sensorial exercises will be unlike anything else that a child has encountered in the way of playthings. A child will be able to perceive sizes, shapes, colours, sounds, textures, odours etc.
The sensorial materials lay a solid foundation for Mathematics, Geometry, Geography, Botany, Art and Music.

Montessori Language
A multi-sensory approach that combines phonics, stories and language experiences to bring meaning to the learning of reading and writing. In the system, the child does not learn by rote , but utilizes all his/her senses to help him/her read and write with proper understanding. Discovery becomes interesting, fun and creative through activities in the Pink, Blue and Green Montessori language series.
Grammar will be taught to enhance the child's attention to the use of words in everyday speaking.

Montessori Mathematics
An activity-based program that allows your child to have hands-on experience in learning mathematical concepts. Montessori arithmetic is taught through the manipulation of concrete objects. Your child will be taught addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, reading of clock, the decimal system, number bonds, length, weight, calendar, capacity, graph, money and problem solving.

Cultural Subjects
The Montessori cultural subjects cover:

Nature study
Its includes the study of living and non-living things. Children will have the opportunity to explore and understand their environment.

Botany and Zoology
Children are exposed to the study of plants and animals. They will be taught to classify impressions into clear and simple categories.

To launch the child's exploration of the world's physical environment, children are introduced to various continents, countries, states, land and water form and the solar system.
